( Asu is mute and communicates through sign or written word )Asu Naji could see his life unraveling around him. It started with his parents passing away when he was 17, continued with the illness that killed his girlfriend and stole his voice at 18, and finished with addictions to gambling, alcohol, and nicotine soon after that. The only good thing to come from all this was a merchant ship, The East, which he inherited from his parentsHe’d been going out to sea with his family for years prior to disaster hitting, and knew the gig well. He was more than comfortable on the ocean, and was excited to set off.The only problem was that he had a 10 year old brother to deal with. Being an immature barely-adult, Asu made the decision to abandon his brother at the local church. Rationalizing this, Asu truly believed it was for the best. His brother, Qassim, never liked being on the ship, and would only get in the way, right?Although he enjoyed traveling and being on the water, depression was a constant issue for him. He struggled with suicidal thoughts and self-destructive behavior, including smoking, gambling, and drinking. These behaviors became habits, habits became addictions. Things spiraled out of control.Unable to pay for his gambling debts, a bounty was put on his head, leading a pair of mercenaries to track him down. The duo had a rule against harming those who are obviously struggling, and upon seeing how Asu didn’t fight back against them, they took pity on him. They helped him hide and pay off his debts, although more he’d forgotten about are always popping up somewhere, and soon became regular crew mates on his merchant ship. The mercenaries became close friends with the captain, and eventually lovers. The trio traveled together for a few years before the mercenaries heard of a bounty on a kid. Fen despised this, and took the job, hoping to find the 15-year-old before anyone else could harm them. After convincing the orphan thief, named Jin, to come with them, Fen introduced them to Asu, who immediately befriended them.Asu became incredibly close to Jin, seeing them as his own kid more than a friend. He was protective of them. He didn’t want them to see him drunk so he stopped drinking. Not wanting his debts to catch up to him while he had the kid in tow, he stopped gambling as well.Months after meeting the ship crew and traveling with them Jin disappeared, leaving Asu spiraling yet again. Soon enough, his deep depression caused a rift between him and one of the mercenaries, leading the two of them to leave him with nothing more than a note. This, of course, didn’t help things, and Asu went from staying in bed all day to spending his time at the local bar. He refused to leave the town Jin disappeared in.During his time spent in the bar, he met a charismatic woman named Leaf. The two hit it off so well that, after a night spent together, they made a deal to meet back at the bar a year later as Leaf had to be on her way. Asu looked forward to their meeting, but his depression kept him at that bar drinking. He wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.Months passed, and his uncle had to get a job at the docks to cover inn fees and had to inform the rest of the crew that he wouldn’t be able to pay them until Asu agreed to sail again. Just when things were looking bleak for the ship, Asu ran into a traumatized Jin on his way home.Asu took care of the kid, making sure they were fit to sail before even considering setting off again. Once he was sure they were good, he stalled another month until he was able to meet up with Leaf. He explained his situation to her and she agreed to join the crew (where she surprisingly was reunited with her twin brother).Back on the ocean, Asu only makes it to shore every few months, following the same route around the world his parents had (minus the stop in his home country, much to his uncle’s dismay)--⎈--Asu knows a number of languages, as he had an interest in them since he was little. He wanted to be able to communicate with the many people who came to the port side trading city he lived in. Knows his universe’s equivalents of German, English, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, but isn’t entirely fluent in any of them, and his native language of Arabic. Besides spoken / written languages, he knows small amounts of various forms of sign language but is most familiar with what would be equal to American Sign Language as that is what he defaults to when communicating.Asu keeps a notebook with him which has a list of the languages and forms of sign language he knows, as well as simple pre-written answers and statements. When introducing himself he will show the list of languages and, if they don’t know any form of sign language, he will communicate by writing things in the notebook.Asu is a bit of an asshole at times, which led to Fen Huo giving him the unfortunate nickname of Assu (pronounced close enough to the spelling of his name, many a person has mistaken it for the actual pronunciation. Naturally, the mute Asu can‘t correct them). Despite this, he is a genuinely caring person. He helps anyone he can, even at a cost to himself. His troubles with addiction and depression lead him to do everything he can to steer people down the right path so they won’t end up like him. He curses like the sailor he is, but many people who only know casual sign language don’t pick up on his foul language.Asu is 5’7, lean, somewhat muscular, with light brown skin. His long, bluish-black natural hair is normally kept in box braids, with a tuft of curly hair left undone and covering his right eye. At times his hair is pulled into a ponytail and his hair-tuft can be pulled back with a bright orange bandana. He rarely takes his hair out of the box braids other than to wash it. He wears loose, baggy clothing, often in shades of blue and brown, and almost always without sleeves. He often has a black jacket with some yellow / gold trim tied around his waist. He rarely wears it. He normally wears loose pants tucked into his nearly knee-high black boots. He has several tattoos on his arms, shoulders, legs, back, and torso. On a bit of black rope worn as a necklace is a pan flute, which he uses when on his ship as a way of ordering his crew around. When on his ship, he can be seen with a wooden staff, used to get the attention of crew members below deck.

Leaf
"Älva"
Ahlgren

⸙ Name: Leaf Ahlgren⸙ Birthday: TBA⸙ Birthplace: Istappsland (Sweden)⸙ Gender: (trans) Female [She/He]⸙ Orientation: Straight⸙ Hair: Originally dark green but has been lightened from days in the sun. Most of her hair is a short bob, with two chest-length strands framing her face.⸙ Eyes: Green, round.⸙ Height: 5'6 (5'7 with shoes)⸙ Weight: 145lbs⸙ Faceclaim: Fleki (Dungeon Meshi)

Leaf grew up with her identical twin brother, Cypress, in a small town outside the capital city of Istappsland. They were both born with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain, and, as the name implies, they don’t feel pain. Because of this, both she and her brother are covered in scars.Cypress had been the reckless one when they were young, but that changed shortly after he went off on his own. Leaf soon got into mercenary work, mostly for the fun of it. Her brother often sent home money to take care of Leaf and their family, so she really didn’t need to work for money. She chose to wear a wooden mask and use an alias, Älva, meaning Elf, just in case someone decided to get revenge.Despite the danger, Leaf enjoyed the job. Not to mention the fact she was good at it. It didn’t take long for rumors to spread of the masked mercenary who didn’t show signs of feeling pain.A few years later, Leaf met Asu Naji in a bar. The two got together and enjoyed eachother’s company so much that, although Asu had to leave the next day, they promised to meet again a year later. When they did, Leaf decided to join Asu on his ship. The East. There, she discovered that her brother had been part of the crew for a few years. She was more than excited to reunite with her brother, and, despite discovering she preferred solid ground, she decided to join the crew permanently, just to be around her new boyfriend and her twin brother.--⸙--Leaf is a very modest woman, she always wears long sleeve shirts, usually button ups, and pants. When doing mercenary work, she wears leather armor and a very creepy wooden mask. Her hair is green like her brother’s, although hers is sun-bleached, making it far lighter than his. Her hair is kept in a short, fluffy bob, with bangs and a long strand of hair on either side of her face. The strands are tied at the end with beads covering the ties.Incredibly kind and gentle despite her preferred job, Leaf tries her best to take care of those around her. Her smile is said to be infectious, and her cheery demeanor is enough to make her own brother seem like an entirely different, and less grouchy, person.--⸙--Leaf enjoys a good fight, and will spar with some of the members of The East. Her preferred weapon is a glaive, although she started off using a spear. She gets along well with the entire crew, but is especially close with Asu and Cypress. For ease, Cypress will be referred to with he/him pronouns, and Leaf will be referred to with she/her pronouns, although both of them use both sets of pronouns.

Parson
Cypress Ahlgren

⸙ Name: Cypress Ahlgren (Cy)⸙ Birthday: TBA⸙ Birthplace: Istappsland (Sweden)⸙ Gender: (cis) Male [He/She]⸙ Orientation: AroAce Gay⸙ Hair: Dark green, kept in a loose braid thrown over his left shoulder.⸙ Eyes: Green, round.⸙ Height: 5'6⸙ Weight: 140lbs⸙ Faceclaim: Lycion (Dungeon Meshi)

Cypress grew up with his identical twin sister, Leaf, in a small town outside the capital city of the snowy country Istappsland. The duo had been born with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain, and, as the name implies, they don’t feel pain. Because of this, both he and his sister are covered in scars. Cypress has more scars than his sister, as he had been the reckless one when they were young. He even managed to lose a finger.Despite the difficulties that come from not being able to tell you’re injured, both Leaf and Cypress made it to adulthood. Along the way, Cypress had gained an interest in their country’s major religion, and became a clergyman. As soon as he was allowed, he set out on a religious journey, his goal being to learn everything he could about his Gods and how they are viewed around the world.Cypress first joined the crew of the merchant ship The East for transportation and a paycheck. Along the way, he learned he enjoyed traveling by sea and had befriended much of the crew. Nearly a decade after joining the crew, Cypress remains on the ship, with no real desire to leave.--⸙--Cypress is a very eccentric looking man. Asu Naji, the captain of the ship Cypress works on, jokes that Cypress looks like a berry bush, given his hair color and choice of accesories. Cypress wears a fairly skimpy outfit, showing off most of his skin (and most of his scars). His long, green hair is kept in a loose braid resting over one shoulder.Sarcastic and fairly deadpan, Cypress often gets accused of being rude despite not intending to come off that way. Because of this, he has always struggled to maintain friendships, even on the ship. Around his sister, however, Cypress can seem like a different person. Her infectious smile and cheeriness even effecting someone so monotone.——⸙——Cypress loves knowledge and spends any time on land in libraries and churches doing religious research. Despite his differences with the Captain, Cypress and Asu, who has an interest in culture and language, will discuss their current research to no end, boring everyone around them.
